roanoke college brick project
Summer Workshop with the Center for Studying Structures of Race (CSSR) summer research students at Roanoke College 2023, campus clay fired to cone 1, 7" x 3" x 2" each
Clay was dug from a part of the campus which was once a plantation. Students collected, broke up, sifted, and rehydrated the clay. They pressed the workable clay into brick molds and stamped with a name of a person who was enslaved in the area. Archive and database research was conducted through CSSR. The clay research, materials studies, brick clay processing and production was done in collaboration with myself, the CSSR director, faculty affiliates, and the students. Fired bricks are used for educational tours.
